Lucy was an Australopithecus, who lived roughly 3 million years ago. 

She was an early form of hominid.  Significantly, although small-brained, she was bipedal (walked on two feet, rather than four).

Another Australopithecus fossil was the "Taung child", discovered in 1924, in a cave in South Africa.

The skull had a puncture wound.  Theories included that it was inflicted by a baboon with a sharp stone, a hungry leopard, and the talons of an eagle.  Read more...
