Experiential Education

Experiential education

Experiential psychology, and in particular, the pedagogical principles associated with experiential education and experiential learning are central to most outdoor education programs. However, experiential education is not a single theory but rather “a collection of practices and techniques in search of a comprehensive theory” (Harmon & Templin, 1980, p. 43). The closest to a comprehensive theory is Dewey’s “theory of experience” (1938/1963). The most popular, applied theory in outdoor education is related to experiential learning cycles.
